Jane’s Addiction “Jane Says” on Guitar Center Sessions
Even though a company sees the value of social media, it doesnt mean the organization or its members are ready for it. Have you started something you really werent ready for? Sometimes it works out and other times it doesnt.
In order for companies to realize the maximum benefit from social media marketing, there must be a certain level of understanding about the nature of online communities, social media sharing web sites and applications. One of the most effective ways TopRank Online Marketing has found to assess a companys awareness, capabilities and resources for social media marketing is to conduct an external audit and an internal survey.
Identifying a companys current state of social media readiness helps determine benchmarks and sets a baseline from where to build from. This is part of developing a social media strategy and helps avoid the random testing many companies are calling their social media strategy.
There are a number of free or low cost tools that one can use to identify a brands current social web participation, ranging from social media monitoring software to profile checking tools like KnowEm to social search tools like How Socialable, 48ers or socialmention.
With many companies, there are often a mix of official and unsanctioned social media accounts setup. Its important to get a handle on such participation, whos managing the accounts, whether they are run by employees or fans and what the company can learn from them. Getting a handle on the difference between how social the company is and will need to become is essential for planning, training and strategy development.
As part of the evaluation process, here are a few questions companies might ask themselves and answer as they embark on a social media marketing journey:
What goals do you hope to achieve from a social media marketing effort?
What measures of success will be used to evaluate a social media marketing program?
What are your current social media channels and destination web sites/pages?:
Do you employ a full-time community manager?
If not, do multiple staff share the role of community manager?
Are you conducting a formal effort at monitoring social channels using a social media monitoring/analysis software application? (Ex: Techrigy SM2, ScoutLabs, Trackur, Vocus, SocialRadar, Radian6)
Is there a particular business unit, division or product that can serve as a test case?
If active, how long has the company participated with social media sites and which? Blogging, Facebook, MySpace, LinkedIn, Twitter, Flickr, YouTube, Wikis, Delicious, Digg, StumbleUpon, etc
Are current social media participation on different sites coordinated?
Is a dashboard and campaign management tool used for social media content promotion?
Have you noticed any particular preferences within the target audience in their social web participation?
Do they prefer particular sites? (Twitter vs Facebook blogs vs forums)
Do they comment, do they contribute content, do they tend to observe, do they not participate at all?
Have you identified and engaged and/or networked with influentials in your target industry on social web sites?
What unique value do current social media efforts offer clients/prospective clients? What need do they satisfy better than the competition?
Are text content or media regularly shared on other social media sharing sites?
Is there a user generated content component of your web site? Profiles, comments, reviews, content sharing: text, image, video or audio?
What departments, business units, cost centers and approval entities would be involved with the Social Media program? Is there an internal social media council?
What internal human resources are available within the company for support and implementation of social media marketing initiatives? (Content creation, network development, promotion, monitoring & analytics, community engagement)
Obviously each situation is as unique as the company and its objectives, but the list above can provide valuable insight into a companys state of social media marketing readiness as well as provoking new thoughts and concepts. The more informed companies are about the social web, the more successful they will be at qualifying and managing social media marketing agency engagements.
You might be wondering, why did I pick 19 questions when 20 would be a much nicer, even number? Its because Im curious what your 20th question would be. What are we missing? What else would you ask to determine the social media readiness of a company, business unit or division?

How to Make a Social Network from Scratch: Part 8 – Creating the User Login (remake)
Social interaction is a human need. From the very first years of life people develop social behaviour and learn what it takes to be an integral part of society. Trying to fit in, they employ various behavioral patterns so as to find out what kind of conduct is considered to be socially acceptable and what is not. During one’s childhood a person makes first friends and hence has an opportunity to broaden his/her experience in interpersonal communication. However, no longer are people interested solely in face-to-face interactions. Given the chance to communicate with others using social networks, such as Friendster and Facebook, a global society has paid its attention to impersonal communication as a new effective way of maintaining and acquiring relationships.
The success of social networks exceeded wildest expectations and captured the attention of a global audience. It became clear that once fascinated by the very idea of social networking, people will not give it up easily. At present, there are about 60 different social networking web sites with millions of registered users each, most popular being Facebook, which attracted over 300 million people. However, bearing in mind how well those sites caters to human curiosity and overwhelming need to know everything they possibly can about their fellow men, the number of users should not come as a surprise. On the contrary, it is obvious that presented the opportunity to connect so easily, people went for it. All that one has to do in order to become a member and enjoy new possibilities of the social networking trend is sign up and log in. After becoming a registered user, the websites allow a great deal of customization – pictures and videos can be uploaded and personal photo galleries can be created. In addition, another thing that attracts a considerable amount of interest is passing comments and adding posts on one’s friends’ profiles. Nonetheless, the fact remains that, the prime objective of making an account on one of the social networking websites was to facilitate effective online communication and efficient information flow between their fellow members rather than spy on them.
Apart from that, it is also a strong desire to show off that motivates people to create a profile. Some of them tend to compete in collecting ‘throphy friends’ and friends in general. The more they gather, the more popular they feel. Undoubtedly, it is pure vanity and burning need to boast about one’s pseudo-celebrity status that prompts people to participate in pathetic activities of this kind. Overwhelemed by the social trend, users feel obliged to report on every detail of their lives. Not only do they share information about their age, domicile and workplace, they also publish some private holiday and wedding photos in order to show off their luxury yachts or designer wedding dresses.
Social networks have been a howling success. Trying to meet their users needs, the founders employed diverse range of methods to make communication between fellow members easier and satisfy their insatiable curiosity. By emulating natural interhuman interaction, the websites have engendered huge popularity, partly due to the fact that compared with face-to-face communication, social networking proves to be somewhat effortless. Therefore, constituting a golden opportunity to facilitate communication flow between people, the social networking fully justifies its status as a global phenomenon.
Advertising on Social Media – Keynote Talk – Krishna Gummadi (MPI-SWS, Germany) – COMSNETS 2018
Abstract: All popular social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest are funded by advertising, and the detailed user data that these sites collect about their users make them attractive platforms for advertisers. In this talk, I will first present an overview of how social media sites enable advertisers to target their users. Next, I will pose and attempt to answer the following four high-level questions related to privacy, fairness, transparency and control of social media advertising today. Privacy threats: what personal information about users are the sites leaking to advertisers to enable targeted ads? Fairness: can an advertiser target users in a discriminatory manner? If so, how can we detect and prevent discriminatory advertising? Transparency: can users learn what personal data about them is being used when they are targeted with an ad? Control: can users control what personal data about them is being used when they are targeted with an ad? About Krishna: Krishna Gummadi is a tenured faculty member and head of the Networked Systems research group at the Max Planck Institute for Software Systems (MPI-SWS) in Germany. He received his Ph.D. (2005) and M.S. (2002) degrees in Computer Science and Engineering from the University of Washington. He also holds a B.Tech (2000) degree in Computer Science and Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras. Krishna’s research interests are in the measurement, analysis, design, and evaluation of complex Internet-scale systems. His current projects focus on understanding and building social computing systems. Specifically, they tackle the challenges associated with (i) assessing the credibility of information shared by anonymous online crowds, (ii) understanding and controlling privacy risks for users sharing data on online forums, (iii) understanding, predicting and influencing human behaviors on social media sites (e.g., viral information diffusion), and (iv) enhancing fairness and transparency of machine (data-driven) decision making in social computing systems. Krishna’s work on online social networks, Internet access networks, and peer-to-peer systems has led to a number of widely cited papers and award papers at IW3C2’s WWW, NIPS’s ML & Law Symposium, ACM’s COSN, ACM/Usenix’s SOUPS, AAAI’s ICWSM, Usenix’s OSDI, ACM’s SIGCOMM IMC, and SPIE’s MMCN conferences.
