You may have already dipped your toes into the social networking pool with LinkedIn and Twitter, but have you considered Facebook? No? Maybe it’s time to add a Facebook Page to your marketing tool kit.
Facebook’s core service is completely free and supported by advertising revenue. To set up an account, you need to sign up with a unique user name and password. This creates a public Facebook Profile that you populate with whatever personal information you wish to share. If you’re concerned about privacy, lock your content, making it available only to those people you confirm as friends.
Once you have a Facebook account, you are able to set up a page for your business. Whereas Facebook Profiles function primarily as a conduit through which users share personal information, Facebook Pages, which launched in November 2007, offer a way for businesses, sports teams, films, brands, and public figures to establish a Facebook presence. Users opt-in to Facebook Pages by adding themselves as your fans. Fans can send messages, respond to posted content, and participate in discussions. In turn, businesses can use their Facebook Page to send updates to fans and engage them with videos, notes, links, and other content that communicates their business message.
Although Pages look and behave much like a user’s personal Facebook Profile, certain differences exist:
Anyone, even people who don’t have a Facebook account, can view a Facebook Page. In contrast, users must have and be logged into a Facebook account to view a Facebook Profile. Because Facebook Pages are viewable by the public, Internet search engines are able to index your Page and share it with their users.
Users don’t need confirmation to become your fan. Anyone can become a fan of a Facebook Page.
Facebook Pages can have an unlimited number of fans; the number of friends is limited for Facebook Profiles.
With Facebook Pages you can send targeted updates to all your fans at once; this feature is not available with Facebook Profiles.
To set up a Facebook Page, you first need a Facebook Profile. Once you establish a personal profile, go to http://www.facebook.com/pages/create.php. Type the name of the Page exactly as you want it to appear. The page name should be one that users will use to search for it because you will not be able to change the name later. Next, choose the category that is most appropriate for your business. Now you can create content and publish your Page.
Facebook Pages come with multiple applications. Browse the application directory to view the options. One application that may be of interest to medical communicators is the Notes application, Facebook’s blogging feature. If you’ve considered blogging, but don’t want to set up your own site, try the Notes application. To write a note, go to the Edit Page for your Facebook Page, click on “Notes,” and click on “Write a New Note.”
Of course, with any social media tool there is the question of whether it’s worthwhile. The answer depends on what you expect from using social media. From a business perspective, Facebook can drive traffic to your website, increase brand awareness, and enable you to connect to and engage customers and people who are interested in your service.
Keep in mind that it’s important to keep your online personal and professional lives separate. In the Facebook world, this means reserving your Profile for your personal connections and using your Page to connect with customers and business associates. You probably don’t want your clients to become your Facebook friends where they can view everything your friends write, mundane or otherwise.

Negative Impacts of Social Networking Sites For Businesses
Social networking sites were created to facilitate social relations between users. Through this websites, people can share their personal information, establish a relationship and for them to keep in touch. Each user can post all their ideas, feelings and information which they are willing to share where they can also search for friends and people as well as issues and products which they find interest at. Users can also restrict or block other people from viewing what they have placed in there since they have the capacity to limit those who can see it. This has been everyone’s favorite way in communicating with others since most of these networks are for free. Individuals are not the only ones who showed interest on them but businesses as well.
If regular individuals can share their information to a million other users, these companies are also interested in spreading their product’s information over to those billions of users in various social networking sites. These users can be a potential customer for their products and what better way to reach out to them than this? Companies and businesses have found a lot of use for social networks.
These sites can be used as a marketing tool and will greatly help these companies reach out and interact with their customers. They can create pages and online communities wherein they can respond to whatever concerns their customer have regarding their product. This actually lessens their overhead cost of having to hire more analysts to worry about how the products are accepted by their buyers. They can easily find out if their products need improvement.
Through these communities or pages, the company can update whatever development, activities, advertisements and promotions regarding the product. They can also use social networking sites to gather information as well as opportunities in the fastest way since everything that runs in the internet is just one click away.
Search Engine Optimization is an effective way to promote business however it takes such a long time before you reach the very top and be known to everyone. Through social networks, you can skip through SEO rankings and get hold of those people who can possibly be your next customers. With that, they can also use to enhance the number of people reached and expand the current market into a limitless group of customers.

Marketing For Photographers is my new series of videos designed to help you navigate social media, build a great photography website, establish a solid pricing structure and increase your photography business. This video is about the social part of social media for photographers. By being social and participating in conversations and sharing knowledge I am able to increase my social currency. Social Currency is important because without it – you are just shouting and nobody is listening. How do you build social currency for your photography business? Start with GREAT Photographs. That doesnt mean that if youre a beginner you cant post it simply means only post your best. There is nothing worse than the photographer that posts 20 images of the same shot. Only one of them is the best which means all of the others arent! So dont post them. Provide CONTENT and CONTEXT. It is not enough to just post an image. Tell a story. Give some background. Sell it! Dont kid yourself into thinking that people actually care about your photography. If they arent the person in the photo – they dont care about your photography unless you give them a reason to. If you are a portrait or wedding photographer, when you post the image, talk about how much fun you had with the subject, how wonderful the wedding was, or how thrilled you are that you had a chance to spend time with this wonderful person. Comments like this make prospective customers think you are actually a nice person and would be fun to work with. Be consistent. Post on a regular basis. I would encourage you to post a minimum of twice a week on every social media platform that you are involved with. It doesnt always have to be pictures. It could be a cool quote, a link to an interesting article, it could be a short story about an experience or a thought that you had. If you are using social media to build your business this is extremely important and in the next video, I will give you some info on tools that will help you automatically generate content for your posts.
