Instagram for Business Basics
Thanks to the apperance of social media tools today, it is so easy to find the relevant, timely information about competitors. Many managers typically can get anecdotal competitive intelligence from tidbits they continually gain. These days, with the popular of many media tools, business owners should follow a more systematic approach that make it easier to learn the way other companies are carrying out.
Using the internet and social media simplifies competitive analysis for those who know how to use the tools effectively. It’s a little more than just Googling competitors. The goal should be profiling competitors to gain a better understanding of their background, financials, products, marketing, strategy and facilities.
It’s not feasible to get all this information in one visit on the web. While some facts may never appear in social media, with patience and research, many questions can still be answered. Social media sites are not silos of information; there is a great deal of intertwined info among sites like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and blogs. It’s an unstructured exchange that will require searching and analysis.
Here are some quick ideas to get started:
1. Join blog discussions germane to the product area. Use blogcatalog.com to find people discussing issues and ideas relevant to the industry, service group or marketing niche. Reading these will provide a background of what’s important. Posting to these blogs is advised only if the contributor is ready to share and get some comments back! This is a step towards being known as an authority in the field. Another strategy is to learn which bloggers influence customers. Measure their influence by Googling them to see what else they are doing. It’s all about engagement, feedback and exchange. That just could lead to some direct business.
2. Search summize.com for data being announced in Twitter about products, companies, and industries. For example, one market researcher learned that his competitors were using Twitter to broadcast announcements to potential respondents, asking them to participate in a survey at the mall for $ 15/hour. This tool also helps with advanced searches about people, words, places, dates, attitudes, and retweets or tweets containing links.
3. LinkedIn.com facilitates a huge amount of competitive knowledge. Most people use LinkedIn to network and connect with other professionals. By digging deeper (and using the keyword, company or people search), users can find information on businesses and functions within companies, job listings, and join discussion groups. To get started, create a brief profile, including a picture to inspire trust, and start adding contacts. Here’s a tip – perform an advanced search and under company name select “Past not current”. This will give a read on the turnover rate and whether key people are leaving.
If this seems daunting, it’s not, just dedicate some time to “social media” activities, create a plan, start researching, and modify as needed based on which tools are working most effectively.
How to Make a Social Network from Scratch: Part 4 – Creating the Menu (remake)
Social Networking websites such as FaceBook, YouTube, Bebo and MySpace offer people the chance to catch up with friends and make new contacts all around the world 24/7, but they are also vulnerable to identity fraudsters as they encourage their members to share large amounts of personal information about themselves in what is essentially a public space, where literally anyone could get hold of it and misuse it.
Identity fraudsters can use the most basic information about their victims such as name, address and telephone numbers for a whole range of unlawful activities, and social sites provide even more opportunities for them as many people divulge intimate details about themselves and their identities. Common problems associated with social networking sites include impersonation fraud, which involves thieves stealing enough personal information that they can actually impersonate their victims for a range of unlawful reasons, such as to access their financial accounts and steal money, and also set up new credit accounts in their name.
How to stay Safe on Social Sites
Social networking can be fun and rewarding, allowing you to stay in touch with all of your friends, but you should think very carefully about the information you are publishing online and never post anything that could be used by fraudsters such as your full name and address, date of birth, telephone number or details about your finances or employment. You should also take some time to learn about the security and privacy features on the social site you are using, and set them to levels you feel comfortable with. Most sites allow you to restrict the amount of people who can view your page, so you should be very careful about who you invite in as a ‘friend’. Remember that typical security questions asked by banks to verify the identity of their customers includes information such as your first school or the place you met your spouse, so don’t publish your complete life history online as fraudsters are very clever at spotting this sort of detail and could use it to gain access to your financial accounts.

Girl’s ‘suicide video’ sparks outrage online
Days after a 12-year-old girl broadcast her suicide live on a social media site; Polk County Police Chief Kenny Dodd said he can’t stop people from sharing the video online. In the video, Katelyn Nicole Davis claimed she had been physically and sexually abused by a family member, then hung herself in the front yard of her Cedartown home on December 30. Chief Dodd was initially unaware video of the girls death was being shared on social media. We were actually contacted by a police officer from California who saw it the night of the event, Chief Dodd told FOX 5’s Deidra Dukes. The police departments been flooded with Facebook messages, emails, and phone calls from as far away as Great Britain from people who are outraged the video is being shared online and demanding the police have it taken down. Chief Dodd has personally contacted several of the individuals operating the websites that posted the disturbing footage. Hes urged them to pull the video, without success. The chief said he wishes he could force them to take it down legally, but his hands are tied. We want it down as much as anyone for the family and it may be harmful to other kids. We contacted some of the sites. They asked if they had to take it down and by law they dont. But its just the common decent thing to do in my opinion, said Chief Dodd.
