Today, email marketing is one of the many things that companies can use to successfully market their products or services. All campaigns can be processed electronically and are usually made together with the techniques of marketing. The presence of spam has become more difficult for email marketing, with numerous emails and left no proverbial be delivered to their targets due to a number of circumstances, ranging from very secure mail filters to eliminate spam with the awareness and diligence by the user. While social media often portrays a curated version of peoples lives, it can also help tell a more complete story of misunderstood communities. Desmond Pattons work as a social worker and researcher led him to create Safe Lab, which brings together youth voices with social workers and computer scientists to solve problems of gang violence. Patton encourages his audience to discover and tell more complete stories about black and latino youth, in order to see them for who they really are. Dr. Desmond Upton Patton is an Assistant Professor at the Columbia School of Social Work and a Faculty Affiliate of the Social Intervention Group (SIG) and the Data Science Institute (DSI). His research utilizes qualitative and computational data collection methods to examine how and why gang violence, trauma, grief, and identity are expressed on social media and the real-world impact they have on well-being for low-income youth of color. His current research projects examine: 1. How gang involved youth conceptualize threats on social media. 2. The extent to which social media shapes and facilitates youth and gang violence. 3. Developing a natural language processing tool for detecting aggression and grief in social media posts in partnership with the Data Science Institute at Columbia University. Dr. Pattons research on Internet Banging has been discussed nationally on media outlets to include the “New York Times,” the “Chicago Tribune,” “USA Today,” NPR, “Boston Magazine,” ABC News and many more. Dr. Patton also provides expert witness testimony using social media during trials. He was recently cited in an Amici Curae Brief submitted to the United States Supreme Court in the Elonis vs. United States case which examined the issues of interpreting threats on social media. Marketing on social networks requires more of a focus on the human element since its more about building relationships then it is your technical knowledge. There’s no way around it, social networking for business requires building trust with others which requires time and interpersonal skills. Even if you are only social networking for business time must first be taken to develop some type of bond with others or you will be invisible to them and useless to your business!
The bonds you do develop need to be meaningful insofar as maintaining a knowledgeable, professional and always helpful profile. For any marketing attempts to be successful people must first have some confidence that you know what you are talking about and that your intentions are good and not all business. Your best results will come ONLY after you have taken the time to develop this good reputation with others.
The most important ‘component’ of the reputation you develop is trust! As touched upon above your reputation must be a positive one that reflects credibility but building trust is just as, if not more important. If people can not trust in you then any efforts you put into social networking for business will be wasted. People can not be expected to part with their hard earned money if they lack faith in you so obviously building trust is a priority. The best way to achieve this trust is to make a habit of being helpful or freely offering any type of information that may be of use or interest to others. Do so without any expectations of receiving anything in return and people will quickly regard you in a trustworthy manner. Besides, it feels good to be helpful to other!
There is no need for technical skills when marketing on social networks just simply be willing to pull up a chair and stay for a while. Tapping into the viral potential of these communities will require building relationships with others first and this will take time and patience. By building trust with people in this way simply makes it easier to effectively promote to them in the future. It is very important to remember these are in fact social communities therefore your acceptance MUST precede any marketing efforts. Once this acceptance is earned by following the 3 suggested steps above it will make social networking for business a breeze for you!
