More than fifty per cent students in Indore log onto social networking sites to complete their school assignments. This was revealed in the Tata Consultancy Survey (TCS) Gen Y Survey 2014-15 carried out in 14 cities among 12,365 students of classes VIII to XII. According to the study, 51.7% students in Indore take social networking route to finish their school assignments. Mumbai students top in this section with 52.9 % students preferring social networking sites for school assignments, followed by Hyderabad, 52%. Indore ranks third in the category, followed by Delhi 51.1%. Usage of online resources is becoming quite popular among students in Indore, especially social networking sites and Wikipedia. During the survey, 84.2% students of Indore said yes to using social networking sites while 12.3% denied. Survey reveals that 65% students of Indore depend on Wikipedia for completing their assignments, while 53.2% use online PDFs as source. While 44.2% students prefer watching online videos related to their subject, 34% read e-books. 28.6% students prefer online tutorials and 21.4% discuss over chats or online discussion groups. Study also revealed that Indore parents top among all the 14 cities in monitoring the activities of their children on social networking sites. Around 58.9 % students from the city mentioned that their parents monitor their activities on social networking sites followed by Kochi with 58.2%, Ahmedabad 54.1%, Hyderabad 53.9% and Kolkata 53.7%. The study also revealed that girls’ activities on social networking activities come more under watchful eyes of parents in comparison to boys. More than fifty per cent students said that their parents have access to their account on social networking sites. Facebook is the most preferred social networking site for Indore teenagers (91%), while only 45% students prefer surfing on twitter. New social sites like Google plus (62%) and Instagram (27%) are being preferred by city students. Among messaging applications, Whatsapp tops the list with 62.8% with more boys users. Every 8 in 10 students said to be using television or newspapers to keep themselves abreast of current affairs and news. Over half of students take online route.
