How to Make a Social Network from Scratch: Part 6 – Creating the Database (remake)
Manufacturers make the world go around. While business has advanced leaps and bounds from a hundred years ago where most manufacturers centered on smoke belching factories, the fact remains true that these producers are key to propelling the world of business forward. These producers make much of the infrastructure for the modern world. Furthermore, the consumer economies of many Western nations are fueled by the ingenuity and productivity of these producers.
However, most manufacturers are not located adjacent to their major markets. When these major producers first arose a century ago, when the Industrial Age was in full swing and the consumer culture that forms the bedrock of the modern business climate was in its infancy, they too were located away from their main markets. Most large factories and producers engaged in some form of international or long distance trade, especially in large nations like the United States or Russia.
Nevertheless, the process of trade and commerce was not as refined as it is today. International and long distance communication was similarly primitive. Producers’ interfacing with buyers was a far more protracted affair that was far more drawn out and slower than it is today. The connectivity of the modern world has given rise to a host of new social networking features for buyers and sellers.
Online social networking sites proliferate across the Internet. These sites enable users to get in contact with people thousands of miles away — instantaneously. While more conventional forms of technology enable communication such as this, email and other telecommunication technology to name a few, social networking sites are different. These sites exist further the world of business because involvement with them is consensual. Parties engage in social networking because they want to reap the benefits of staying in touch with potential business colleagues. In short, it saves time and helps them manage their businesses with more efficiency.
Social networking sites, however, are primarily for private use. The massive social networking websites such as Facebook and Twitter exist to facilitate communication between private individuals. This is not entirely appropriate for professional use. Nevertheless, the massive popularity of these sites has led to the creation of social networking websites that are specifically designed to accommodate business professionals that are in need of connecting to possible partners.
The online social networking model has given birth to a whole host of websites that cater to business people that are looking to have the same thing. This enables buyers and sellers to interact and interface with one another. Digitally leveraging one’s network to source a product from China or find a new sales channel in Australia is a more efficient way to meet your business goals. This allows manufacturers to interface with buyers in a fresh new way that benefits both parties.

You may have already dipped your toes into the social networking pool with LinkedIn and Twitter, but have you considered Facebook? No? Maybe it’s time to add a Facebook Page to your marketing tool kit.
Facebook’s core service is completely free and supported by advertising revenue. To set up an account, you need to sign up with a unique user name and password. This creates a public Facebook Profile that you populate with whatever personal information you wish to share. If you’re concerned about privacy, lock your content, making it available only to those people you confirm as friends.
Once you have a Facebook account, you are able to set up a page for your business. Whereas Facebook Profiles function primarily as a conduit through which users share personal information, Facebook Pages, which launched in November 2007, offer a way for businesses, sports teams, films, brands, and public figures to establish a Facebook presence. Users opt-in to Facebook Pages by adding themselves as your fans. Fans can send messages, respond to posted content, and participate in discussions. In turn, businesses can use their Facebook Page to send updates to fans and engage them with videos, notes, links, and other content that communicates their business message.
Although Pages look and behave much like a user’s personal Facebook Profile, certain differences exist:
Anyone, even people who don’t have a Facebook account, can view a Facebook Page. In contrast, users must have and be logged into a Facebook account to view a Facebook Profile. Because Facebook Pages are viewable by the public, Internet search engines are able to index your Page and share it with their users.
Users don’t need confirmation to become your fan. Anyone can become a fan of a Facebook Page.
Facebook Pages can have an unlimited number of fans; the number of friends is limited for Facebook Profiles.
With Facebook Pages you can send targeted updates to all your fans at once; this feature is not available with Facebook Profiles.
To set up a Facebook Page, you first need a Facebook Profile. Once you establish a personal profile, go to http://www.facebook.com/pages/create.php. Type the name of the Page exactly as you want it to appear. The page name should be one that users will use to search for it because you will not be able to change the name later. Next, choose the category that is most appropriate for your business. Now you can create content and publish your Page.
Facebook Pages come with multiple applications. Browse the application directory to view the options. One application that may be of interest to medical communicators is the Notes application, Facebook’s blogging feature. If you’ve considered blogging, but don’t want to set up your own site, try the Notes application. To write a note, go to the Edit Page for your Facebook Page, click on “Notes,” and click on “Write a New Note.”
Of course, with any social media tool there is the question of whether it’s worthwhile. The answer depends on what you expect from using social media. From a business perspective, Facebook can drive traffic to your website, increase brand awareness, and enable you to connect to and engage customers and people who are interested in your service.
Keep in mind that it’s important to keep your online personal and professional lives separate. In the Facebook world, this means reserving your Profile for your personal connections and using your Page to connect with customers and business associates. You probably don’t want your clients to become your Facebook friends where they can view everything your friends write, mundane or otherwise.

GIRLSASKGUYS STUDY: Millennials Overwhelming Prefer Brunettes over Redheads, Blondes
Hair Color Survey
Marilyn Monroes platinum blonde look may no longer be the ultimate in sexual appeal according to a new study about what the opposite sex believes about hair color and attractiveness.
In a poll of nearly 600 Americans on GirlsAskGuys (GirlsAskGuys.com) a cross-gender question-and-answer social community with more than 10 million monthly participants consumers were asked about preferences in hair color in the opposite sex. Both men and women under 30 overwhelmingly said they preferred brunettes to both blondes and redheads.
What were seeing is that despite a lot of media portrayals to the contrary, people tend to prefer brunettes, said Tolga Tanriseven, founder and CEO of GirlsAskGuys. Its a wake-up call for advertisers, as well as media producers that actively court the millennial demographic. Sprinkle in some blondes and redheads in your productions, but feature the brunettes.
More than 65 percent of women said they prefer brunette men versus blondes (20 percent) and redheads (15 percent); while 49 percent of men said they prefer brunettes versus redheads (30 percent) and blondes (21 percent). In particular, males under age 18 are the most attracted to brunettes, with 55 percent choosing them over redheads and blondes.
Taken on GirlsAskGuys.com the poll was taken by 282 women and 306 men during the month of August.
Both men and women were then split over their preference for either redheads or blondes, which was most apparent for men ages 25-29, who prefer redheads (35 percent) over blondes (15 percent). Conversely, 20 percent of women prefer blonde men, compared to just 15 percent of redheads. The discrepancy is largest for women 25-29, who prefer blondes (21 percent) over redheads by (12 percent).
About GirlsAskGuys With more than 10 million monthly users, GirlsAskGuys is the most trusted online information portal for questions and advice about the opposite sex, leveraging the curiosity of an ever-expanding social community in which girls and guys of varied backgrounds discuss a wide array of lifestyle issues providing candid, practical advice by sharing experiences and opinions.
